NFC business card vs QR code: which should you use?

Updated

Use both. NFC is faster in person: one tap and your details open, with nothing to aim. A QR code works on any phone with a camera, including ones with NFC switched off, and it works on a screen or a slide. A card with an NFC chip and a QR code on the back never leaves you stuck.

How each one opens your details

An NFC card has a small chip and an antenna inside. When someone holds their phone near it, the phone reads a link from the chip and opens it in the browser. There is no battery in the card and nothing to install on the phone.

A QR code is the same link, printed as a pattern. The other person opens their camera, points it at the code, and taps the link that appears.

Either way they land on the same page. The difference is only in how they get there.

Where NFC wins

  • Speed. A tap takes about a second. Nobody has to find the camera, hold steady, or wait for focus.
  • Busy rooms. At a stall or a crowded event, a tap works in poor light and at an angle where a camera struggles.
  • It feels deliberate. Handing over a card and tapping it is a moment people remember, which is the point of a business card.

Where QR codes win

  • Every phone. Some phones have NFC switched off, and a few have none. Every smartphone has a camera.
  • Distance. A QR code on a banner, a slide or a table tent works from across the room. NFC needs the phone a few centimetres away.
  • Screens. You can show a QR code from your own phone or put it in an email signature. A chip only works in person.

Why the answer is both

Choosing one means losing some of the people you meet. Tap first; if their phone does not respond, turn the card over and let them scan. That is how the Nuhdge card is made: the chip inside, your QR code printed on the back, and both open the same Nuhdge Profile.

If you have no card yet, the QR code alone still works. Your Nuhdge Profile and its QR code are free.

What neither one does on its own

Both NFC and QR only send your details one way. You still end up without theirs, which is the same problem a paper card has. Nuhdge adds a way back: after opening your profile, they can send their name, phone and email to you, tagged with where you met. That only happens if they choose to share.

Try it on the next person you meet.

Your Nuhdge Profile and QR code are free. No app needed.
